If you like the 'official' bl2 face book page and follow @gearboxsoftware on twitter, they sometimes post shift codes on both and are separate rewards. Free skins and golden keys. Sometimes the codes are good for a few hours sometimes longer. I have 40 keys.

I also do all the side missions it helped me level up so the story missions aren't so tough.

but you wil lhave to do it in your game to count for your mission
